Editor's note: When 33-year-old Katharine Lee Bates conceived the opening lines to her poem “America,” she was standing at the top of Pikes Peak. It would be her ode to the gorgeous American landscapes she was seeing on a summer trip across the country and the poem, published in 1895, would later be made into the iconic song “America the Beautiful.” Pikes Peak, the gorgeous Colorado mountain that started it all, shines in this collection.
